Unforced Rhythm of Grace

Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

When that verse first got stuck in my head probably five years ago now, I just remember that I liked it. I liked how it sounds when the words rolled in my tongue “unforced rhythm of grace”. Hmm… sounds good.

However, how it sounds and how it actually applies in life is somehow different. It doesn’t sound as appealing anymore when what’s required of you is completely and unequivocally trusting God.

“It’s the everyday “Yeses” to God that leads to everyday obedience”

Yet that’s what “unforced rhythm of grace” is. It’s on the daily grind of “Yes” to Jesus. Even when our mind wants to succumb to naughty disobedience. The continued “Yes” to kindness and generosity even when your kindness meter is down to level 0. It’s in the praying for the Holy Spirit to come to fill you up, even when you just want to lie down in your emptiness, proud and giggling. It’s the everyday “Yeses” to God that leads to everyday obedience, that will not feel like forced obedience when spending time with Him is your daily norm. It’s not just a forced habit, but it’s this beautiful enduring flow of His grace and peace.

One day, and believe me that day will come, when you wake up and realize “Wow, I’ve been living in His unforced rhythm of grace”. Where the Holy Spirit’s peace is your daily portion, and stress is just a thing of the past. And you realize you are more like Jesus now, when you first started this journey with God.

But for now, practice patience, practice kindness, practice generosity, and later through the Holy Spirit and by the grace of God, you will be more like Jesus. Kind, gentle, compassionate, fearless, peace, good.
