The girl knows she’s different. She doesn’t age. She has no family. She has visions of a past life, but no clear clues as to what she is, or where she comes from. But there is a face in her dreams – a light that breaks through the darkness. She knows his name is Gabriel.

On her way home from work, the girl encounters an injured stranger whose name is Jonah. Soon, she will understand that Jonah belongs to a generation of Vampires that serve even darker forces. Jonah and the few like him, are fighting with help from an unlikely ally – a rogue Angel, named Gabriel.

In the crossfire between good and evil, love and hate, and life and death, the girl learns her name: Lailah. But when the lines between black and white begin to blur, where in the spectrum will she find her place? And with whom?

Gabriel and Jonah both want to protect her. But Lailah will have to fight her own battle to find out who she truly is.

my thoughts

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a YA paranormal book in this particular genre, I mean specifically with vampires and angels. Together in one story! I also can’t help myself but be reminded of my Twilight days… the beginning of my reading of YA PNR genre..

Anyway. Lailah. I believe this book got popular first in Wattpad and the rest is history. I can totally see why readers would gravitate towards reading Lailah. Two things. The story and the love triangle. While there is some originality to the story, there are also a lot of things going on that are like “staples” in books such as this, but that doesn’t make the story less appealing, if more, it makes it more relatable. Not that what happened in the book will happen in real life, but ‘relatable’ in the sense that we as the readers don’t have to adjust a lot in our own imaginations. lol. Then there’s the love triangle. Of course both guys have to be complete opposites. We have the good guy, Gabriel. And the bad guy, Jonah. And there’s an extra third guy but I won’t even bother talking about him hehe. While a lot of people don’t like love triangles, I have a love and hate relationship with them. And in this case, yeah, love and hate relationship still. I most certainly don’t like some of the things Gabriel and Jonah did, unknowingly or knowingly towards our main character Lailah. But they have their moments so that does overshadow the bad moments.

Let’s talk characters. Lailah Lailah Lailah. She’s the average goody kind of girl who is also very innocent..and people just love her. This is probably annoying to some but it’s endearing to me. And I have a hunch her character will toughen up in the books to come. I hope her character building won’t disappoint! There are a lot of characters in all the books I’ve read who started as this fragile little human girl and ends up being the kickass girl tough chick she deserves to be. I hope truly hope Lailah reaches that peak.

The story. I think I have much more to learn about the series for me to really love love it. I do love the action packed things it has got going on. I’m so into that. It’s a little bit on the darker side of the PNR genre though, but I think you can guess that from the cover. Look at those grabby grabby hands trying to get Lailah. Plot twist-wise, there are a lot that will throw you off! If not for the first times, probably the second ones, third ones…

This series is something I’m sure I’ll look forward too. I know not everyone will love it, but if you’re into YA Paranormal and urban fantasy genre, this is probably something you should try reading before judging if you like it enough to continue or not. There are a lot, really LOTS of vampire angel novels out there, and this is just one of them but I think it’s worth the shot. I’m not pushing you guys! I won’t do that. 🙂

Note: A copy was received in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.

I’LL do this very quickly because I realized I’m posting a lot on this post. hehe.

I imagined Lailah as Diana Agron. Probably because Diana has that innocent vibe going on for her.

Max Irons for Gabriel. He just has this angelicness in him. It’s not a word but don’t care lols. If you see even just one picture of Max Irons, can you not just picture him as Gabriel? EEH!

Lastly, I had a hard time choosing for Jonah’s character. Maybe because all my bad boy-image celebrity crushes are way too old (or just a tad bit older) than Jonah’s character image. But I guess, Xavier Samuel fits the role. hehe.

What do you guys think of my choices? 🙂

Next, we have a guest post from Nikki Kelly!

A day in the life of Nikki Kelly, an Author

I should probably explain right off the bat that I am a night owl and don’t tend to work during the day unless I am doing a 48hr sit-in (this occurs more often than my sleepy head would like!). Some days vary, and will depend on what’s going on at the time. For example, if I’m organizing swag giveaways, somewhere in here I will update spreadsheets, pack some envelopes and visit the post office. If – like in October – I am on tour, it would be an entirely different day altogether. But most of the time, my average day is as follows:

15.00hrsAlarm buzzes. I hit snooze.

15.30hrsAlarm buzzes again; this time my Pug and Chihuahua attack me and we cuddle for 15mins. Then I get up, get showered and get dressed.

16.30hrsI can’t work in a messy environment (OCD clean freak!), and by now my hubby has been up and gone out to work long ago, leaving a trail of mess in his wake, so I spend 30mins cleaning the flat (apartment if you’re American!). Then I throw a joint of meat in the slow cooker, in readiness for dinner later!

17.00hrsI sit down in my work room, aka ‘The Cave’, and I spend an hour catching up on the social media messages I’ve missed while sleeping, going through my emails and responding, and updating the ‘to do’ list.

18.00hrsI take the pups to the park for a walk, hit the grocery store and call my Mom for our daily catch-up call.

19.00hrsI throw in spuds, veg and other foods, and sort out dinner. I will usually be tweeting while doing this.

20.00hrsHubby returns and we eat together and spend about an hour catching up on daily events – the usual stuff. He then goes off to the bedroom to do some more work, and I leave for ‘The Cave’.

21.00hrsDepending on what’s going on, usually I spend anything between an hour to two hours writing any blog posts I have on the ‘to do’ list. Again I check social media, respond to anything I haven’t already, and reply to tweets and other messages!

23.00Pot of tea is brewed, obligatory twerk in the kitchen to motivational music is done and now it’s time to write!

MidnightStart writing!

If I am working on edits, I tend to do a four-hour sit-in and then take a break before moving over to creative writing.

If no edits – be that for a novel or a short story, depending on the day – I will instead spend an hour rereading and revising the previous night’s chapters before moving into creative.

05.00amI take a proper 30-min break, make more tea and eat a snack – usually a yogurt or some toast.

05.30Back to work!

06.30Hubby up for work and doing his morning dance to some terrible sounds that he calls ‘music’! I stop and say hey, we have a mini catch-up and then it’s back to writing!

09.30I’m starting to flag. Around this time I usually make some phone calls, drink more tea and walk the pups again.

11.00The sun is up, and I’m now in bed!! Zzzzzzz…

I was born and raised only minutes away from the chocolately scent of Cadbury World in Birmingham, England. So it will probably come as no surprise that when I’m not dreaming in Vampires & Angels, I dream in chocolate! For the past ten years I have lived in West London with my hubby and two dogs, Alfie – the Pug & Goose – the Chihuahua.

LAILAH is my debut novel, and first launched in serial form to wattpad, a readers & writers community. Within just 6months, LAILAH had over a million reads and thousands of comments and votes.

Since then, The Styclar Saga has gone on to pick up a traditional deal with Feiwel & Friends, and LAILAH, the first book in the series is due for release on October 7th 2014.

These days I spend my time balancing my amazing job of writing fantasy fiction, with my other, very important role of Chocolate Connoisseur. I like to multitask and do the two together. It makes me happy.
